10 Reasons to take a Sewing Class

Abby from the Dutch Label shop sent this note out to their subscribers this afternoon.  I thought it was fantastic and right on.    Read on for the top 10 reasons to take a class.

Whether you are a first-timer with a willingness to learn, a seasoned pro looking to beef up your skills, or a dabbler returning to sewing after a hiatus, a sewing class may be the perfect solution to keep you inspired and capable in your craft! Not to mention the social aspect of group sewing… Sewing classes are available everywhere and for all levels. With a little research, it can be easy to find your niche. Still not convinced? Here are ten good reasons to take a sewing class, no matter where you are in your sewing journey.
  1. When you learn something in-person and from an expert whose skills you respect, the lessons are more likely to be fully engaged, and the material is more likely to sink in and stick.
  2. You have the opportunity to ask one-on-one questions of the instructor, resulting in personalized advice that will help you far more effectively than a one-sided tutorial.
  3. You can learn from experts about very specific and specialized topics, such as lingerie, swimwear or lace, that can be difficult to master on your own.
  4. Seeing a skill demonstrated in real life is more exciting, inspiring, and interesting than watching a video tutorial any day.
  5. Instructors often bring samples of finished or partially finished products with them, which you can examine up close and ask questions about.
  6. Instructors can sometimes go off-topic. This instructional equivalent of “taking the scenic route”  can end up canvassing more topics than you expected, and you may actually end up learning more than you paid for!
  7. Other students will often share tips and insights, and this meeting of the minds may give you new ideas and inspiration.
  8. A good instructor will inspire you and encourage you in ways that you can’t glean from a book or video. Personal interaction allows them to perceive where you struggle, where you need to be pushed, and how to best motivate you.
  9. Taking a class is a great way to meet fellow “sew-aholics” and fabric junkies. These new friends can be a great network with whom you can share time, ideas and materials.
10.   People who take classes from experienced instructors tend to have more refined and well-rounded technique because they have learned in a systematic way from the best. If you do not have a skilled sewer in your life to share these skills with you, there is no reason you cannot seek out that mentorship elsewhere.

We're Moving to the Ground Floor

It was formerly the music room in the school.

This week, Connie and her husband painted the new Sewing Room using the same colors as our upstairs room.    We are thrilled that the electrical upgrade to add 8 outlets is done.   The floors will be cleaned and polished soon.   Then the physical move will happen.    I know everyone will certainly appreciate  not climbing the stairs with their sewing machines..  We'll be in the new room by the first week of June.  Watch for the announcement and pictures.
Ask and you shall receive Joyce.
A plug at the back of the room.
The conduit to carry the wires is in.
We have 8 new plugs all around the room.
